Wyomissing Creek Macroinvertebrate Inventory: Is Our Creek Healthy?
Roll up your sleeves and step into the stream for a hands-on environmental adventure! Come discover what’s living beneath the surface and gain a new appreciation for the health of the Wyomissing Creek. As part of our Earth Day Celebration, the Penn State Master Watershed Stewards will lead an engaging Macroinvertebrate Creek Study designed to connect participants with the hidden world of our local creek. Join us on Sunday, April 26th from 2:45 to 4:00 PM. All participants should meet at Ruth’s Bridge on Old Wyomissing Road in The Parklands at 2:30 PM, and the group will walk together to the creek for the study. Aquatic macroinvertebrates are insects in their nymph and larval stages that spend much of their lives in water, and these small creatures tell a big story about stream health. Participants will help collect specimens using strainers - as long as the creek depth and flow rate are safe. After collection, the group will work together to identify what was found and learn how these organisms help reveal the overall health of a stream. The program also includes discussion about simple and meaningful ways we can protect and improve our waterways for the benefit of wildlife and our community. The creek study is open to anyone ages eight and older. Participants under the age of twelve must be accompanied by an adult, and adults are encouraged to attend and fully take part in the experience alongside their children. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to learn together while enjoying the outdoors. It is important to come prepared to get wet. Footwear is especially important because of slippery creek rocks. Please wear shoes with thicker soles and good traction such as rubber boots, old sneakers, or sturdy sport sandals with secure straps. Bare feet, flip flops, and Crocs are not permitted. Registration and a signed liability waiver are required to participate, and space is limited to ensure a safe and high-quality experience for everyone. Please click HERE to register.
Limited Space Is Available:
The session is capped at 15 participants - a wait list will be created but participation cannot be guaranteed.
