Borough of Wyomissing Announces Exciting Earth Day Celebration: A Green Learning Experience

Wyomissing, PA - The Borough of Wyomissing is thrilled to announce its upcoming Earth Day Celebration: A Green Learning Experience, scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 20th, at Happy Hollow Playground. This event promises to be a day filled with education, engagement, and eco-friendly fun for the whole community.

In an effort to promote responsible waste management, iGreen Electronics Recycling will be onsite to accept electronic waste for safe disposal, providing a convenient and environmentally conscious solution for unwanted electronics. "We are really excited to sponsor this year's Earth Day Celebration and be part of such a meaningful event," said Walter Diener, Operations Manager from iGreen Electronics Recycling. "It's inspiring to see our community come together to support environmental initiatives, and we are proud to play a role in promoting sustainability and responsible waste management."

Starting at 9:30 am, families are invited to kick off the celebration with a free family yoga session led by instructor Amy Sharkey. Participants can connect with nature and embrace the serenity of Happy Hollow Playground as they embark on a journey of mindfulness and relaxation.  Additionally, a Farmer's Market will be set up along Wayne Avenue in the park, offering fresh produce and handmade goods from local vendors, such as B & H Organic Produce, Kellerland’s Apiary, Ciccio’s Olives, and more.

Throughout the morning, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities focused on promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. From earth-friendly crafts to storytelling sessions by the Wyomissing Public Library, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Adding to the excitement, the Wyomissing Girl Scouts will be hosting a bake sale, offering delicious treats to satisfy your sweet tooth.  Attendees can also look forward to exploring the Greenhouse Kitchen pop-up shop, featuring plant-based food and other specials. 

“I am thrilled about the expansion of activities planned for this year's Earth Day Celebration," said Randy McKinley, Director of Recreation for the Borough. "Our goal is to make the event appealing for the whole family, from the kids to the parents and grandparents. We want everyone to come together to learn, have fun, and celebrate our planet."

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Berks County will be on site to provide expert advice on plants and gardening. Attendees can gain valuable insights and tips to cultivate a green and thriving environment in their own homes.

The educational opportunities will be further enriched by the presence of various organizations on site. The Wyomissing Area Garden Club, Flora Teeter Landscape Architects, Berks County Conservation District, New Castle Lawn & Landscape, MaryJo Brown Photography, Berks Nature, and Wyomissing's JR-SR High School Environmental Club will all be contributing to the event with informational displays, interactive activities, and resources to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

New this year, in the afternoon, Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Stewards will lead a Macroinvertebrate Inventory of the Wyomissing Creek.  This hands-on, enrichment activity is tailored for 12–16-year-olds and aims to assess the health of Wyomissing Creek through the identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Participants will have the opportunity to collect organisms using strainers and to discuss the implications for their findings.  There are two afternoon sessions, but with limited space for participants, registration is required through WyomissingREC.com.

As an additional highlight, Miss Maggie's Mother Earth Show will debut this year, providing educational entertainment for children. Topics covered will include recycling, renewable energy, and caring for plants and animals. This interactive show aims to inspire young minds and instill a love for the environment.

This event is a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, and we look forward to a day filled with learning and camaraderie."
