Join the Park & Shade Tree Commission: Help Preserve Wyomissing’s Green Spaces
The Borough of Wyomissing is currently seeking residents interested in serving on the Park & Shade Tree Commission, an essential group dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Borough’s Parklands, trees, and green spaces. Appointed members will serve a five-year term without compensation and play an active role in shaping the future of Wyomissing’s natural environment.
Commission members meet bi-monthly on the fourth Wednesday of odd-numbered months at 1:00 PM at Borough Hall. Applicants should have a passion for environmental sustainability, tree preservation, and parkland management. While background knowledge in these areas is helpful, it is not required—just a willingness to learn and contribute to maintaining Wyomissing’s scenic beauty.
The Park & Shade Tree Commission has also established three subcommittees for residents who may not be able to commit to a full commission term but still wish to get involved:
- The Education Committee focuses on community outreach and environmental education. This committee works to share important updates about the Parklands, conservation efforts, and responsible land stewardship. Information is distributed through newsletters, social media, and parkland postings, with future plans for in-person educational sessions.
- The Outreach Committee is dedicated to coordinating volunteer efforts for environmental projects, including invasive species removal, riparian buffer plantings, and organized cleanup efforts. This committee is also seeking a chairperson to help organize events such as Earth Day activities and park restoration projects, making it a great opportunity for someone passionate about hands-on environmental work.
- The Bird Box Committee is responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of bird nesting boxes throughout the Parklands. This committee helps support the local songbird population by ensuring the boxes remain in good condition, tracking nesting activity, and making recommendations for repairs, replacements, or relocations as needed.
These roles offer a meaningful way to engage with the community and support Wyomissing’s commitment to environmental preservation.
Residents interested in applying for the Park & Shade Tree Commission or a subcommittee position should submit a letter of interest to JReimer@wyopd.org by March 25th, 2025.
