Caring for Wyomissing’s Memories

The Stone House Pond— a cherished gathering place in our Parklands—has been the focus of extensive work by the Borough’s Public Works Department as crews have sought to determine why the pond is losing water. Throughout the fall, staff conducted thorough inspections and repairs, working tirelessly to locate leaks and address deterioration in the pond lining. Their efforts have been exhaustive and detailed, and we thank them for the care and attention they’ve devoted to this important community landmark.

Inspectors found that the age and condition of the pond’s blacktop lining have led to widespread cracks and crevices, producing multiple leaks across the surface. Given the scope of the deterioration, a permanent repair will require a larger, more complex project than initially anticipated. Because of this, work to fully rehabilitate the pond’s lining must be suspended for the time being while we evaluate long-term options and funding.

In the near term, crews will complete the controlled draining and a full cleanup of the pond area so it can be refilled in time for the Borough’s annual Lighting of the Greens celebration on Saturday, December
6th. We felt it was important for the pond to serve as the picturesque backdrop for the holiday festivities and the luminary-lined walk.

Looking ahead to winter recreation, we cannot guarantee that the pond will freeze safely for skating this season. Although the underground water source that feeds the pond will continue to flow and keep it full, the current condition of the lining and the steady inflow make sustained, safe ice formation unlikely. Public Works will continue to monitor conditions and will only declare the ice safe if it meets strict safety standards.

We know the Stone House Pond holds many memories for residents—from summer gatherings to winter skating—and preserving it remains a priority. The Borough will continue to explore long-term repair options and funding, and we will share updates as plans progress. If you have questions or would like to share memories or photos of the pond, please contact Randy McKinley at rmckinley@wyomissingboro.org
